Whitley Abbey Community School is proudly leading the way in promoting an innovative curriculum delivery – Opening Minds. We are delivering a KS3 curriculum that prepares students for the 21st Century.
Students will spend 2/3 of their week in Opening Minds lessons. They will work mainly with a single teacher and study English, Humanities, Maths, and Science Modern Foreign Languages.
Whitley Abbey will use the National Curriculum to provide learning objectives for its students but they will not be delivered though ten separate lessons. Opening Minds teachers will plan student learning through thematic work that focuses on developing skills, competences and knowledge.
In the remaining 10 periods of study students will go to lessons in Art, Drama, Physical Education, Information and Communication technology and Product Design. These subjects will also deliver the key learning competences. Their work will also be linked into the content of the Opening Minds lessons.
Student learning will meet all traditional subject requirements but challenge and extend all students through the development of transferable learning skills. The curriculum will also make perfect sense to students as a joined up experience. |
