Business Education 14 - 19

We know that enterprise skills will be an essential part of our students’ education. 29% of young people will be employed in business by 2010. The opportunities available in Coventry will be in the business service sector, especially leisure and “value added” businesses.

Business Education 14-19Within the 14 – 19 curriculum all students will have access to a core, discrete Business curriculum. At Key Stage Four Business knowledge, skills and understanding will be delivered through BTEC First delivery. All students take a Business or Business related vocational course, equivalent to two or four GCSE passes. These courses are equivalent to GCSE and are recognised on an equal status with employers and training providers.

At Post 16 all students will have access to GCE A Level courses in Business and Business related subjects. We will also provide the opportunity for students to continue BTEC courses into Post 16 for one more year, in order for them to achieve Certificate or Diploma accreditation at C grade pass equivalence.

All students will also engage in enterprise and work related learning programmes as part of their entitlement experience. They will have Horizon Events, Accelerated Learning packages and Breakout activities as key experiences every half term.

This extensive vocational learning package will be enhanced through local partnerships with small and large business organisations. A Business Park development, built by Jaguar Cars, will add to our capacity and place the School at the heart of a Business and Enterprise campus.  We will be able to challenge and extend all students and clients within a local and “safe” environment.

Ofsted’s View -
June 2007

We are proud to report that OFSTED found Business education to be
“good” overall with aspects of “very good”.

•  The overall effectiveness
   of business education is
   good
•  Students’ achievements
   on examination courses
   is good
•  Teaching and Learning
   in business studies are
   both good and often very
   good
•  The provision of Key
   Stage 4 and Post 16
   business courses is
good. At Key Stage 3 it
is also good and is a
   sound investment in the
   future
•  Leadership and
   management of business
   studies are both good
•  Inclusion is good
•  Behaviour in lessons is
   very good

We have been asked to work on developing relationships with local small to medium scale businesses and ensure that financial literacy is taught more explicitly. These matters will be addressed through our Business and Enterprise status plan.
