Whitley Abbey Business & Enterprise CollegeWhitley AbbeySchool achievement award - department for education and skills

Enterprise at KS3

We believe that Enterprise education motivates our students and raises aspirations. This leads to higher levels of motivation by Year 9 as students begin to face up to the challenges of GCSE examinations and planning for a future career.

Our students learn to problem solve, take responsibility for their own actions, engage in real issues and evaluate their successes and failures.

Within individual subjects students also receive Business education that ensures a good level of financial capability and economic and business understanding.

For Whitley Abbey students this means:

Active learning through hands-on experience of running a business, making the decisions, analysing the problems and coming up with solutions and evaluating mistakes.

Taking risks in a challenging but safe environment. We learn through making mistakes, reflecting on the lessons learnt and having the courage to go again.

Teamwork - we know that Industry requires successful team working. We develop our students’ ability to be team players through role play, mini business activity, sports provision and learning activities in lessons.

Learning in real environments as all students have the opportunity to extend and develop their skills outside of the classroom, within and beyond Coventry.

The Whitley Abbey Experience

Enterprise in action”

Whitley Abbey students will all receive a core experience in Business and Economic Awareness. It will result in qualifications awarded by ASDAN and Young Enterprise.

This will provide each student with a strong foundation for study at 14 – 19 and the opportunity to work in teams to achieve Business goals.

In reality this will mean:
• All Year 7 students will
   work towards completing
   the ASDAN Next Steps
   Awards Scheme. They
   will receive a breakout
   day to complete a
   special unit
   Understanding Business
• Through group work,
   simulation software and
   working alongside real
   business people they will
   learn to business plan,
   manufacture and deliver
   a product or service and
   market it
• A group of 15 volunteer
   students will work
   alongside real Bank
   employees to deliver a
   Whitley Abbey Branch for
   the Bank. It would be
   open at Lunch and Break
   for deposits and
   withdrawals. It could be a
   useful savings strategy
   for school trips
